Position Summary

The Student Advocacy Specialist works with the Assistant Director of Student Advocacy, Compliance, and Student Affairs around general student advocacy and all matters related to student compliance. In addition, recommends policy related to student misconduct and serves as a designee for student violations of the Code of Conduct. Additionally, as a student compliance officer the Specialist enforces the Schools Student Immunization, compliance for the Alcohol EDU, and Sexual Respect Modules. Facilitates medical and religious accommodation request from students, interfacing on their behalf with faculty. This position outlines health, wellness, and counseling resources as well as services for the Moses Center for Accessibility and interfaces regularly with key stake holders in all of these departments. As an integral member of the department of Student Affairs, this position supports office activities and initiatives, and reports directly to the Assistant Director of Student Advocacy, Compliance, and Student Affairs.


Required Education:
Bachelor's Degree in a related area such as social work

Preferred Education:
Master's Degree in a related area

Required Experience:
3+ years experience working in student affairs and/or counseling

Preferred Experience:
3+ years Previous experience in student conflict negotiation, student ombudsman, diversity initiatives, supporting at risk students, and providing support services with students with disabilities.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Demonstrated skills in spreadsheet applications, written and verbal communication, working with students, strong commitment and sensitivity to diversity and inclusion. The ideal candidate should possess knowledge of psychosocial issues and challenges experienced by STEM/Engineering students, and an understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized groups in such settings. Additionally, candidate will need to possess knowledge of cultural humility, critical race theory and systems of power, privilege and oppression, excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work proactively and independently on projects, strong writing and communication skills, and a commitment to student advocacy.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Familiarity with NYU Engage and NYU Albert.  A strong foundational knowledge of historically excluded populations/communities and issues.  Experience with project management and event planning.  Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, and ability to work in a fast paced environment independently.  A commitment to and experience with social justice and diversity education.  Facilitation experience for both small and large group discussions.
