Position Summary

The Director for Center Operations (DCO) will provide strategic operational oversight to Silver School of Social Work’s new Constance and Martin Silver Center on Data Science and Social Equity. The DCO establish and operationalize the appropriate and necessary research infrastructure to advance the mission of the center. The establishment of the center will support NYU Silver scholars conducting work in data science for social equity impact and in studies harnessing big data. In order to leverage the growing availability and complexity of such data, the Center will help develop and nurture the scientific skill set of Silver faculty, doctoral students, and researchers.


The Director’s initial primary objectives will include, but may not be limited to: establishing a robust strategic operations function; mapping the landscape of data science at NYU and in social work and social science programs nationally; developing policies and procedures that align with NYU research and academic policies as applicable; assist with grant and IRB submissions, and monitoring the center’s budget and identifying best practices. This position will also work closely with the Office of Research to develop and present alternative scenarios for strategic decision-making.


Position Term: September 1, 2021- August 31, 2022 with possible extension contingent on funding.


Required Education:
Bachelor's Degree

Preferred Education:
Master's Degree in social work, public health, psychology, or other social/behavioral science.

Required Experience:
7+ years relevant experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must include implementing procedures and working with budgets.

Preferred Experience:
7+ years Bilingual in English and Spanish. Knowledge of data science and allied fields (e.g., big data, machine learning, wearable sensors, affective computing, artificial intelligence, mobile health. Ability to learn new computer programs (e.g., Telerivet, REDCap). Knowledge of ClinCard and other research compensation systems (e.g., Tango). Knowledge of or ability and willingness to learn NYU administrative systems for consultants, POs, iBuy, etc

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
A deep understanding of internal control concepts & implementation of related systems as well as strong leadership, organizational skills, and professional acumen. Ability to develop strong reporting systems that enable quick, prudent decision-making. Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing. Demonstrable attention to detail, flexibility, ability to work on a team, and punctuality. Experience in social behavioral science and research. Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods. Experience with IRB applications, managing consultants, and accounts payable systems. Commitment to social justice, racial equity, health equity, and reducing racial/ethnic disparities in health. Knowledge of Qualtrics, REDCap, and other computer applications used in research. Ability to create and manage budgets.
