  • Position Summary

    The position of Sergeant supports the mission of the Department of Public Safety to foster and maintain a safe and secure environment for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors by supervising Security Officers, Security Specialists and Contract Security Personnel.

    Qualifications

    Required Education:
    High School diploma or equivalent.

    Preferred Education:
    One to two years college-level courses.

    Required Experience:
    At least one year's supervisory experience or the equivalent.

    Preferred Experience:
    Private Security, Military, or Law Enforcement.

    Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles. Knowledge of security best practices and procedures. Analytical skills and objective observance of situations and quick decision making. Skill in motivating subordinates. Skill in managing situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and impartially. Strong writing, communication and interpersonal skills. Valid, unrestricted driver's license.Working Conditions:Sergeants may be exposed to the attendant discomfort or elements of serving outdoors for prolonged periods of time in inclement weather conditions, including walking or standing for extended periods while on duty, climbing and descending stairs, and foot patrolling.Physical Requirements:Applicants must be in good health and must have and retain physical strength, including the ability to lift items up to 50 lbs., physical stamina, and agility, visual and auditory acuity to perform the essential responsibilities of his position. Applicants must be able to operate departmental equipment, including radios, use hands repetitively, and have the ability to listen and communicate calmly, effectively, and courteously in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
