Scholars at Risk (SAR) is an international network of over 500 of higher education institutions in 39 countries whose mission is to protect threatened scholars, prevent attacks on higher education communities, and promote academic freedom. SAR provides temporary academic positions of refuge for threatened intellectuals at network member institutions, helping to save courageous voices. SAR also helps with counseling, referrals, and campaigns for scholars who are imprisoned or otherwise silenced, and conducts training, education, and advocacy to promote university values worldwide.
Scholars at Risk (SAR) is seeking a highly-organized and team-oriented individual to join the SAR team as a grants and development administrator. This is new position will supports SAR’s program and fundraising efforts by providing primary drafting and reporting on concept notes, proposals, applications and reporting on grants from foundations, government agencies, corporations and other institutional funding partners. This position reports to the Development Officer, Deputy Director and Executive Director. The position requires excellent research, writing, and organizational skills, attention to detail and judgment. It is ideal for a proactive individual with excellent writing skills who takes initiative and would like to make a major contribution to SAR, an international human rights movement focused on free inquiry and expression. The position requires timely and professional communication with SAR/NYU staff and grant sponsors.
Degree in English, Journalism, Human Rights or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Graduate degree preferred.
2+ years’ relevant work and writing experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Marketing or fundraising, grant writing, or editing in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience working in human rights, free expression, higher education or related areas and writing fundraising materials on a wide range of subjects. In addition, experience synthesizing complex information is desired.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent writer and researcher, with excellent copy-editing skills including attention to detail and tone. Ability to handle multiple projects, ability to digest complex information in diverse subjects (all SAR program areas) and translate the information and knowledge into effective fundraising documents. Additionally, must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to manage multiple writing projects simultaneously. Must be able to manage iterative writing and editing processes with a range of stakeholders. Discretion concerning sensitive and confidential donor information is required. Computer proficiency, including MS Office (particularly Excel and Outlook).
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Related development database experience. Ability to work with all levels of employees across the organization and be able to effectively cultivate relationships among various key constituencies. Must be able to work gracefully under pressure, be collegial, proactive, and a problem solver. Demonstrate an understanding of and affinity for SAR’s mission or demonstrate capacity to quickly develop fluency in SAR’s work and program areas.
