Position Summary: The NYU Tandon Center for K12 STEM Education seeks an exceptional Project Manager who will have responsibility for a number of the Center’s initiatives. The Project Manager will interact and collaborate with faculty, administrators, students, and external partners. The Project Manager will oversee certain programs and student-personnel; from time-to-time develop new projects and associated funding sources; document, and present, work internally and externally; and provide overall leadership and operational organization to the Center’s mission and its programs. The Project Manager will draw on the extensive experience, research findings, and practical learnings the Center and Tandon faculty have garnered through many iterations of its work with students, teachers, and school systems.
About the Center for K12 STEM Education
The New York University Tandon School of Engineering has long recognized the critical need to engage K-12 students, teachers, schools and school systems in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through hands-on, authentic learning. These efforts aim to increase access to high quality learning experiences, STEM-focused higher education and related careers. For nearly 20 years, with public, philanthropic and corporate support, the Center and Tandon’s faculty have developed innovative programs that bring STEM disciplines and concepts to every level of K-12 education.
The Center and its programs place strong emphasis on serving those with limited access to high-quality STEM education, including students of color, girls and young women, and those from low-income backgrounds. Our work with teachers largely focuses on educators serving these demographic groups. The Center’s K12 STEM education programs support the School of Engineering’s mission of research, scholarship and teaching. Our methodology for K-12 STEM education focuses on utilizing the expertise and passion of trained graduate and undergraduate students to develop and teach hands-on, activity based STEM curricula to younger students and their teachers under the guidance of faculty members.
We strongly emphasize authentic experiences: grounding curriculum and instruction in the application of STEM concepts in the real-world and in a social context; connecting content to ongoing research in engineering and computer science labs; employing pedagogy that is inquiry based, problem solving and iterative; and deploying the actual tools of scientists and engineers—from microcontrollers, electronic components, actuators and the like to high-end testing and experimental equipment used in research.
The Center operates at a significant scale. For example, our summer programs serve nearly 600 middle and high school students and 50 teachers on campus, and 300 high school students and 15 teachers off campus, in programs that run from 1 to 7 weeks. We additionally conduct academic year programs both at the Tandon campus and at K-12 schools. We engage over 100 engineering and other STEM students at the graduate and undergraduate level as instructors and mentors, and work with over 25 research labs and associated faculty.
Successful candidate will hold a BS in a STEM discipline or BA in a relevant education field. MS/MA preferred.
The candidate will have two to five or more years of relevant experience in any combination of academia, STEM program management or design, teaching or school administration, or related endeavors.
The candidate will demonstrate a passion for education, personal lifelong learning, acquisition of new knowledge, and the applications of engineering, technology, science, and math in society.
The candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the broad dissemination of high quality STEM education initiatives to create equal opportunity in higher education STEM studies and in STEM professions.
Preferred Other Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:
(i) Professional instincts that are collaborative, free-thinking, strategic, and creative.
(ii) Exceptional at making a positive impression through communication. This should include very strong verbal, writing, and presentation skills. Skills in new media communication such as blogs, websites, and social platforms a plus.
(iii) Fluency with data, its collection, analysis, and presentation. Excellent general computer skills.
(iv) Ability to use and/or create systems and technology as tools to scale your work effectively.
(v) Familiarity with engineering and science materials, equipment, and gear such as microcontrollers, 3-D printers, sensors, electronic components, experimental apparatus, etc.
