  • Position Summary

    The Director of Research Administration for the Julia Lane Data Initiative (“JLDI”) will administratively, fiscally, and contractually manage the entire scope of research activities, including the strategic direction of the portfolio of grants and contracts, for NYU Wagner Professor Julia Lane’s data initiative. The Director will manage all projects to support the goals of the JLDI’s research initiatives. The Director will oversee and manage daily operations, including all HR-related matters, research personnel payroll, grants administration (both pre-award and post-award), budget management, compliance and risk management, data analysis, and financial analyses to ensure the accuracy of grants budget. The Director will establish priorities with the JLDI’s leadership in support of research objectives, and will oversee and contribute to the preparation of new grant and contract proposals and budgets to support current and new initiatives, The Director will also engage with sponsors and customers to identify new opportunities, develop new approaches, and roadmap the pipeline of new activities in collaboration with various stakeholders. Julia Lane’s portfolio of work, based at NYU Wagner, has the collective goal of using data to transform the way governments access and use data for the social good. Her center is a fast-growing, University-based startup that has already created dozens of pilot projects, worked with over 100 agencies – federal, state and local - and trained over 250 individuals. The JLDI’s team leaders have designed and implemented training, research projects, and a secure data facility; all of these activities are attracting national and international attention.

    Qualifications

    Required Education:
    Bachelor’s degree

    Preferred Education:
    Master’s degree in Public Administration or Business Administration

    Required Experience:
    This position requires a minimum of 7 years or more of relevant experience with grants management and financial analysis, or an equivalent combination of education and progressive experience. Experience managing a team is required. Relevant experience in project management and coordination, human resource management, budget management, as well as technical writing for a non-profit, government, or higher education entity. Relevant experience managing a diverse grant and contract portfolio.

    Preferred Experience:
    Related experience in an academic, research, or government environment. Familiarity with data and public policy. Prior experience working with budgets and an understanding of the fundamentals behind financial reporting. Prior experience or interest in working with a secure remote access data facility. Prior work in an entrepreneurial fast-paced environment.

    Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
    Self-starter with strong analytical skills and detail oriented. Knowledge of laws, principles, rules, and policies relating to federally-funded grants and contracts. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Knowledge of database and spreadsheet software. Exposure to financial analysis and trend analysis. Strong writing and communication skills. Must demonstrate strong organizational and project management skills, as well as interpersonal skills such as relationship building and an ability to work well with others. The ability to multitask and prioritize work is also needed.

    Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
    Proficiency with MS Office suite, particularly Excel. Database management experience.
