  • Position Summary

    The position of Sergeant, First Class Community Response Unit supports the mission of the Department of Public Safety to foster and maintain a safe and secure environment for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors by overseeing Security Personnel and by taking proactive measures to reduce crime while building strategic partnerships in the university community. In furtherance of these goals, the Sergeant, First Class will be a part of the Community Response Unit (CRU) which will address issues of safety and security on campus utilizing patrol, crime prevention concepts and safety initiatives.


    Required Education:
    High School diploma or equivalent.

    Preferred Education:
    Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field.

    Required Experience:
    2 years' relevant experience in security at NYU or in a higher education environment. At least one year's supervisory experience or the equivalent.

    Preferred Experience:
    Supervisory experience, Campus Security, Public Safety, Military or Law Enforcement background.

    Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
    Excellent communication, oral, interpersonal, writing and presentation skills. Knowledge of security best practices and procedures. Analytical skills and objective observance of situations and quick decision-making. Skill in managing situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and impartially. Ability to observe and listen to victim/witness while taking copious notes, and capable of writing detailed, comprehensive factual reports, submitting completed reports into the DPS records management system and conducting follow-up as needed. Knowledge and understanding of proactive public safety crime prevention strategies; ability to problem solve issues that arise during tour duty. Ability to operate departmental equipment, including radios, and have the ability to listen and communicate calmly, effectively, and courteously in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Ability to multi-task and work independently. Valid, unrestricted driver's license. Must be able to work twelve (12) hour shifts. Every other weekend will be a three (3) day weekend off duty. Ability to participate in active threat response, crowd control, bike patrol, public speaking, crime prevention and similar training.

    Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
    Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Certification a plus.
