Position Summary

This grant position will primarily be responsible for managing the various technological needs of the C2SMART Center, the first Tier 1 federally funded University Transportation Center (UTC) in New York City, led by NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering. The new center, called Connected Cities for Smart Mobility toward Accessible and Resilient Transportation (C2SMART), aims to accelerate transportation opportunities arising from unprecedented recent advances in communication and smart technologies.

As a member of a new research center, the candidate will be instrumental in developing and maintaining the database and network infrastructure that will be relied upon for C2SMART’s project and research activity. This candidate will work closely with C2SMART faculty and leadership staff in:

  • Leading the development of comprehensive web-based database solutions for the C2SMART Center’s activities ranging from research, education, outreach, and technology transfer, as well individual projects and related data, in compliance with the Center’s data management plan and federally required guidelines.
  • Making it possible to safely and securely share data from field tests and non-traditional sensing technologies so that decision-makers can address a wide range of urban mobility problems involving people and goods using multiple modes of transportation in compliance with federal guidelines.
  • Identifying, proposing, and supporting the development of innovative solutions that focus on disruptive technologies such as connected travelers (vehicles and people), autonomous vehicles, shared mobility (such as a bike or car-sharing programs), and the Internet of Things.
  • Helping better understand the role of emerging big data technologies in supporting research activity related to the center’s goals.
  • Organizing and helping maintain C2SMART’s commercial and in-house software libraries per NYU and center-prescribed policies.
  • Rigorously documenting all designed infrastructure and processes to facilitate seamless technology transfer and transition.

In addition, the candidate will also be relied upon to oversee the maintenance and development of the center’s web presence, provide technical guidance to faculty, staff, and students in the procurement and usage of hardware and software tools, as well as contributing towards the design and development of new tools as required by sponsored projects.

  • A degree in Computer/Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field is required. A graduate degree is highly preferred.
  • At least three years of experience in development and maintenance of complex, web-based databases, and/or development of data management tools. Experience in supporting research projects is highly preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of cloud-based data solutions, relational databases (such as Oracle, MySQL), and knowledge/experience with NoSQL and Open Source technologies (such as Hadoop, Parquet, MongoDB, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of data visualization tools and frameworks such as D3, jQery, and experience in web development and associated languages and libraries (PHP, CSS, HTML, Javascript).
  • Experience with on-line communication tools for research information acquisition, with a familiarity or interest in emerging technologies and research-oriented problem solving is preferable.

Demonstrated history of employing version control in development along with rigorous documentation of network and processes is required. Experience training and monitoring staff or students involved in development in terms of best practices in software documentation, version control, security, etc. is preferred.
