Position Summary

The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University (ISAW) seeks a dynamic, energetic, and highly creative individual to lead its acclaimed Exhibitions and Public Programs Department as Associate Director of Exhibitions and Gallery Curator. Founded 10 years ago, ISAW now supports two exhibitions a year that frequently have national and international loans, that are accompanied by a scholarly catalogue, and that use a wide variety of methodologies – archaeological, historiographic, receptive, and ones that bridge the art of the ancient world with modern and contemporary artists. The Associate Director and Gallery Curator, who will report directly to and works closely with ISAW’s Leon Levy Director, will be responsible for communicating all major activities of the department’s fast-paced exhibition schedule to the Director. Primary duties include developing exhibition narratives from the initial checklist to the exhibition’s installation in the galleries with both internal and external scholar/curators, overseeing the negotiation of loans and exhibition contracts, setting the design aesthetic for the exhibition installation, and overseeing the content of exhibition catalogues as well as their design direction. The position is also responsible for managing all exhibition project and fiscal year budgets, reporting these finances to both ISAW’s senior leadership and to the University on a regular basis. Another important responsibility is identifying key foundation and private donors for each exhibition, overseeing the research and writing of applications, and if successful, properly stewarding donors. The Associate Director and Gallery Curator has four direct reports, but also has to maintain sound relationships with a host of outside companies – from communications consultants, to contracted graphic and catalogue designer to external curators and artists.
