Position Summary

The IT Technician I supports the work of the Digital Media and Computer Services department at the NYU Institute of Fine Arts (IFA). Duties include configuring various computer and peripheral devices, performing extensive repair, supporting the development or modification of applications, and providing technical assistance to faculty, administrators, staff, and students. The incumbent brings an ability to understand NYU IT best practices and procedures, and apply them locally at the IFA. The IT Technician I works under limited supervision, may train new technical support staff and/or student workers and may resolve problems that require a degree of tact and sensitivity.

 

The Institute of Fine Arts is a thriving center of advanced research and graduate teaching in art history, archaeology, and art conservation. A site of knowledge production since its founding in 1932, the Institute has also produced many of the world’s leading art historians, museum directors, curators, and conservators. 

 

Principal Duties:

 

  • Run hardware and software diagnostics; identify and resolve problems, referring more complex problems to supervisor or other employees for resolution.
  • Set up and configure Apple and PC computers, ensuring that the configuration and equipment will meet both NYU IT requirements and the needs of the local IFA population..
  • Render local service relating to network access and WiFi issues, and liaise with NYU telecom and University internet providers to ensure consistent connectivity to the internet and telephone systems working within the established systems for these services.
  • Provide technical support to faculty, administrators and students, providing orientations, training and problem resolution for most endpoint, connectivity and enterprise system issues.
  • Serve as a resource to junior technical support staff in the maintenance and repair of equipment. Perform skilled maintenance and extensive repairs on moderately complex parts and equipment. Confer with vendors to address complex and/or warranty-eligible problems.
  • Assist with the training of student and/or casual employees and assist with training of junior technical support staff.
  • Respond to general IT inquiries and provide problem resolution. Refer more complex problems to supervisor or other employees for resolution.

 

Qualifications

Required Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent and some relevant technical training.

Preferred Education:
Relevant Certification

Required Experience:
2+ years Experience providing customer support in an IT environment

Preferred Experience:
Experience providing technology support to a lab or department in a university setting, including knowledge of specialized software, systems, or technologies.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Understanding of computing procedures and standards and desktop and network configurations. Expertise in both network hardware and software to serve as a resource to junior technical support staff on the majority of standard procedures and some non-recurring problems and non-standard situations.

Additional Information

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is USD $36.900. This rate is based on bargaining unit contracts. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
