Position Summary

The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University (ISAW) seeks a dynamic, energetic, and highly creative individual to lead its acclaimed Exhibitions Department as the Bernard and Lisa Selz Director of Exhibitions and Gallery Curator. Founded 16 years ago, ISAW now supports an exhibition each year with national and international loans, that are accompanied by a scholarly catalogue, digital complement and that use a wide variety of methodologies – archaeological, historiographic, receptive, and ones that bridge the art of the ancient world with modern and contemporary artists.

The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World is a unique center for advanced scholarly research and graduate education, offering the Ph.D. degree through NYU's Graduate School of Arts and Science. It has a wider geographic span than other programs that focus on the ancient world, incorporating not only Europe and the entire Mediterranean basin, but also the Near East, and Central, South, and East Asia. In its research and its teaching of doctoral students, ISAW emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, one that transcends modern boundaries of nation. It supports scholarship that crosses customary disciplinary boundaries – art history, literature, archaeology, history, geography, geology, economics, and sociology, among others – to create a new intellectual framework for understanding the ancient world, and to train a new generation of scholars steeped in that integrated approach.

The Bernard and Lisa Selz Director of Exhibitions and Gallery Curator, who will report directly to and works closely with ISAW's Leon Levy Director, will be responsible for communicating all major activities of the department's fast-paced exhibition schedule to the Director. Primary duties include developing exhibition narratives from the initial checklist to the exhibition's installation in the galleries with both internal and external scholar/curators, overseeing the negotiation of loans and exhibition contracts, setting the design aesthetic for the exhibition installation, working to develop public programming and outreach associated with the exhibitions, and overseeing the content of exhibition catalogues as well as their design direction. Prepare and edit catalogues and other publications (physical and digital). Manage both internal and contract staff, handling a wide range of aspects related to exhibitions and public events. Work with development team to identify and pursue funding sources for exhibitions. Extensive travel in connection with the arranging of exhibitions.
