Position Summary

The purpose of the position is to provide legal counsel and support primarily with respect to the University's real estate portfolio and operations as well as other corporate and transactional matters, as needed. This position will be a main point of contact for various University departments including the Office of Real Estate, Facilities and Construction Management, and Faculty Housing. The Associate General Counsel will handle legal matters relating to the acquisition, sale, and leasing of real property; zoning, land use, and environmental matters; construction contracts; provision of University housing to students and faculty; faculty loans and other financing programs; real estate tax and tax exemption analysis and filings; landlord-tenant issues; and third-party licensing and facilities use. The position will focus primarily on New York City real estate but will also support the University’s real estate operations in other domestic locations as well as its Global Sites in other countries. The Associate General Counsel will liaise closely with outside counsel and University stakeholders and serve as a subject matter expert within the Office of General Counsel on matters relating to real estate. The Associate General Counsel will also assist with a variety of other corporate and transactional matters for the University including commercial contracts, finance, intellectual property, and corporate governance.


Required Education:
Bachelor's Degree and JD (from ABA accredited law school) required and

Required Experience:
10+ years related professional legal experience in the areas of real estate, construction, and related finance matters, including substantial hands-on experience drafting and negotiating contracts and managing transactions.

Preferred Experience:
10+ years Mix of law firm and in-house experience within an academic institution, large non-profit organization, or government agency preferred. Experience working on other types of corporate and transactional matters in addition to real estate is also a plus. 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Legal knowledge and experience in the area of real estate and construction and related finance and tax issues. Excellent oral and written communication and creative problem-solving skills, the ability to work collegially with diverse personnel, demonstrated judgment and discretion, strong analytic skills. Must be highly ethical and a team player.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of legal issues relevant to universities and/or non-profit organizations preferred. Experience working on real estate matters in foreign jurisdictions is a plus.
